Scott:
Scott was born in New York, but grew up in Montana. He is the youngest of four - his identical twin is one hour older. He is all man :) He fishes, hunts, snowboards, plays the guitar, swing dances, plays soccer, and will sing if I ask him too (hehe). He was one of the best soccer players in the state in high school, went to the state championship, and played on the all-state soccer team. Scott also has a great sense of humor and never fails to make me laugh. He is one of the most kind and thoughtful people I know (seriously, I'm not just saying that). Scott served a mission for our church in Santiago, Chile, so he also speaks Spanish. He is about a year away from graduating from BYU in Mechanical Engineering (after which we are hoping he gets into Purdue for a Master's in aerospace engineering), and he is ranked #7 out of a few thousand kids in the whole engineering college. He would never tell you that, but since I'm the wife, I can brag!
Jess:
I was born in Utah, but lived in Indiana for my whole life. I LOVE Indiana. When I was in high school I didn't, but now that I've lived away, I've figured out I would love to end up in Indiana. I grew up playing sports, but basketball was always my favorite. I remember tons of summer days and mornings before school outside or in a gym shooting hoops with my dad - definitely some of my favorite memories. I also like to read, eat anything chocolate, and spend time with my family. Scott taught me how to snowboard, and even though I have fun with it, I'm not very good. I'm also obsessed with babies, they are SO cute I can't even stand it! I like playing board games and running and doing crafty things. I will graduate in two months from BYU in Family Life, but after that my plans depend on where Scott gets an internship and where he gets accepted to grad school! Such is the life of married college students :)
Our Love Story:
We met in October 2011 as a result of some funny events. I had just gotten the first kiss from a guy I was dating, and my roommates and I had this tradition where when anything cheer-worthy happened, we would go out on our balcony and scream and cheer. Scott's building was facing ours, so when we cheered, he opened his window and told us to be quiet because he was trying to study. Lucky for him, his roommates opened their door and cheered with us. We took them cookies the next day as a thank-you, and that's how we met! We were friends for a few months before we went on our first date, and after that we didn't go on another date for a while, haha. We "officially" started dating in the beginning of April 2012, but I went home for the summer while Scott stayed at BYU.
Fast-forward to the end of the summer, when I got back to school, and we started spending most of our time together. I was also living with my sister and some awesome roommates that year, so between the two that was one of the most fun years I've had at college. We lived in the same apartment complex again, so it was like a ten second walk to each other's apartments. We did a lot of fun stuff - ultimate frisbee intramurals, tennis, basketball, soccer, hiking in the mountains, snowboarding, pottery (my idea), and he taught me a little guitar too. I went to his family's house for Thanksgiving, and although we had been talking about it for a bit, when we got home from Thanksgiving decided for sure that we wanted to get married! We went ring shopping together - sometimes I like things to go the way I plan on them going, and I like knowing what is going to happen, too. So I wanted to choose my ring. Luckily, Scott is pretty patient with me :) I went home to Indiana for Christmas break, and Scott went to Montana. We talked on the phone a lot, and I had so much fun with my family over break, but it was great to see each other again too.
I knew he was going to propose soon, but I didn't know when or how. The night before, he said he was going up to Salt Lake to hang out with some guys from his mission, so my roommates and I had a girls night and did nails and stuff. They all knew what was happening but I was so clueless!! I'm pretty gullible - Scott uses it to his advantage all the time! So the next day, January 26, 2013, Scott and I went snowboarding up in Park City. The plan was to spend the whole day snowboarding, and then we were going to go up to one of his friend's cabins in the mountains and dinner and the ring would be waiting. But, literally about five seconds after I got off the lift, I fell (I meant it when I said I'm not that good at snowboarding) and we thought I had a concussion. It took about an hour and a half to get down the mountain after that, because I pretty much slid on my butt the whole way down. I wanted to go home because I didn't feel good, but Scott was pretty - and pretty, I mean VERY - insistent on staying in Salt Lake/Park City. I called my dad to see what I should do about my head, and he said just drink some Gatorade and take some pills, "because I have a feeling you'll really want to remember this day." Don't ask me how I hadn't figured everything out by then.
We spent the day in Salt Lake, and then Scott said he had one more surprise for me, so we went back to Park City and up to the cabin. I seriously was thinking he had just made me a cute dinner or something. So he went up and told me to wait in the car or something. Then, all of a sudden, the garage door opens, and I see my sister, Scott's twin brother Brian with a camera in his hands, and our friend Dan all standing right in front of me in the garage. They stared at the car (with me in it) for a while, and then I could hear someone say, "Oh crap, she is still in the car!" So they all ran behind Brian's car, which was parked in the garage, like I hadn't seen them :), and then Brian ran out and closed the garage door, and then went back behind the car. So by then, I had finally figured everything out. I was laughing so hard, they were so cute and funny! After Scott, who had no idea about anything that had just happened, came back out and got me, he took me up to a romantic room with dinner and candles and roses. He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was perfect!
Nothing went according to all his careful plans, but you know, I kind of liked it that way. I think it took some of the pressure off the day, and we just had fun together. He is so easy going, it didn't even phase him that much! And it sure makes an awesome memory. I am one lucky girl.
